7 Quick Blogger Tips

Following the #bbloggers chat tonight, I just thought I post a few things that came up in the chat. I’ve got 7 quick tips, that I hope clear up some issues.

1. How to get Twitter/Facebook/etc Buttons
Search for ‘social media buttons’ on Google. If you want unique ones, you might wanna add terms like ‘cute’ or ‘unique’ or whatever to it. It might take a while to find those you want (It took me hours to find the ones I have now!) Once you have them, upload them, copy their address and create a HTML code for it that you can then paste into a HTML/Javascript widget.

2. How to remove borders from images etc.
Any border can be removed by simply adding the following into your code:

img {
border: 0px
}

You wanna place this code where you see other things being listed in a similar style with { } brackets.

3. How to do/get Pages onto your blog
I’ve written a tutorial for this on msdriftedtg.blogspot.com (where you can also find other tutorials for Blogger)

4. Alternatives for Google Friend Connect
GFC is being removed from WordPress and generally the consensus is to offer your readers as many subscription options as possible. For alternatives, google ‘Alternatives to Google Friend Connect’ – popular alternatives are rss feeds, email subscription and bloglovin

5. Issues with font types, sizes and colours
Remember that people need to be able to read what you write. So keep that in mind when choosing the font for your blog. People don’t have the patience to dicypher what you are trying to say. Legibility is important. It’s been proven that serif-fonts are easiest to read. In terms of size – remember to not make it too small. There could be people on very high screen resolutions (the higher the resolution, the more fits into the screen, which means things get smaller relatively) – so they might not be able to read what you’ve written! Also, font colour – don’t have a white background and a light grey text – WHO IS MEANT TO BE ABLE TO READ THAT. Google ‘colour contrast ratio’ to check whether the text and the background colours you’ve chosen work together.

6. Reply-commenting on Blogger
I did a blog post about this today – scroll down to the next blog post!

7. Photo Editing
You don’t need to have fancy photo editing software like Photoshop or Paintshop Pro. It’s nice to have, but not a must-have. I have Photoshop, but I barely use it now that I’ve found ipiccy.com and pixlr.com – both great websites where you can upload your pictures, edit them and then store them on your computer. It might take a while to get used to what it all means, but play around with the functions and you’ll see there’s plenty you can do with these websites!

Generally speaking
There’s a million and 2 questions that popped up today and I’m happy to help with every single one. I’ve taught myself everything I know and I could’ve answered most of the questions that came up easily – it was just all happening too fast.
But remember, sometimes there is no one-size-fits-all solution, so if you want my help, I might need your help by sending me your template so I can see how it’s built and what it looks like, etc – and then we can work on it together.

      Difficult to say with blog headers – cuz you can do so much with it. but one thing I would say is that it shouldn’t cover like half the website, so that people can only see your blogposts when scrolling down. And it should be ideally as wide as the entire blog itself if that makes sense.
