New Collection: MAC’s from bloggers for bloggers collection

Have you heard? MAC is releasing its gazillionth collection! Hurrah! *rollseyes* oh wait! It’s made by bloggers! Cool, right?

Let’s show you some pictures and information before I get to what I think…

Hocus Pocus: The Makeup Girl., Sparkle, Neeley, Sparkle!: Beauty Blogging Junkie., Parisian Skies: Lipstick Powder N Paint, Jealousy Wakes: Temptalia.
Sonoran Rain:  Shades of U, Evoloution Revoloution: Makeup and Beauty Blog., All Of My Purple Life: Afrobella., Nitro:licious 2046: Nitrolicious., Caqui: Beauty Maverick.

No one loves MAC more than a beauty blogger. To thank them for their passionate devotion and always honest feeback, we invited nine of our favourites to out lab in Toronto to custom-create their own eye shadow or lipglass, exclusibely online, just like the makeup-mad minds that created them

The  collection is out in the US & Canada only on 21 June, 2011.

MY Thoughts
Most of you probably know I’m not the biggest fan of MAC. Partially because I find their products (except for the PRO products and their lipsticks) aren’t actually THAT great and because I think it’s outrageous how much cash they are trying to make by throwing collection after collection at the consumer. And then it’s not even collections with all brand new products; no it’s repromotes! Yes, of course, every cosmetics company out there is after money, but no other brand than MAC throw as many products at the consumer. Not even its sister companies Estee Lauder or Bobbi Brown (all three are owned by Estee Lauder Group).

YES It’s cool that those bloggers got to create products. But I think it’s got different reasons than to thank them. You dont let someone create a product just to say thanks. Maybe for their own personal use, yes but not for mass retail. I think MAC has noticed how much counteraction they are getting from the bloggersphere towards their million and two collections they release each year. They’ve noticed how even professional makeup artists protest against MAC trying to milk each and every penny out of our pockets. I think this is just another method. I’m pretty sure they know their customers well enough to know that 90% will think it’s supercool that they’re letting bloggers do the work. And yes it is.

But theres a mass of bloggers out there, so why not sell this worldwide? One could argument thats because those well-chosen bloggers are US & Canada based – well has that ever stopped us from reading and liking blogs from outside our country? Clearly not, because most of those bloggers that were selected for this collection are well-known world-wide.

So to summarize: I think it’s really cool that these lovely bloggers got to work with MAC. But I don’t agree with this being the millionth collection MAC is releasing this year alone. It should be a special edition with lots of promotion, but I have barely heard anything about this collection and I don’t think many of us will be spammed with stuff about it either. If they REALLY wanted to thank their bloggers, they could’ve easily selected popular bloggers from all over the world and retailed this worldwide rather than just focussing on the American market. But then again one could argue ‘better than not doing anything at all’.

Sorry about the rant, but I hope you guys get why I personally don’t like the collection. BTW, this is not to say that I like the other collections any better. Just dislike this one for other reasons!

Much love,
Miss drifted Snow White

you dont need to be patronising. im just sharing my thoughts. and i didnt say that no other company isnt aiming at making profits. i actually stated that. however, what gets me angry is this aggressive way of making money and no other company is doing it that way. even their sister companies Estee Lauder and Bobbi Brown aren't doing it even though they could. I dont find it ok and I definitely dont find using bloggers (even when it's cool that they even considered them) to make profits. and of course i dont have to buy a product if i dont like it, but that's not the point of my post, is it? my point was to share my thoughts on the entire thing.

I am sure lots of other brands are looking at ways to 'bloggify' their products – I think will be an interesting experiment for other brands to learn from. I've often wondered why nobody has bothered to bring out a nail colour called 'Blogger'. Surely that is a really easy one.

I really do think they have done a great job with actually using the bloggers' ideas and exposure, but at the same time, I think it's just another means to making money. I really do hope they will make a European based bloggers collection :) xxx

I totally agree with you, when you say about MAC releasing collection after collection and half the time the products in these collections are products being repromoted, that really bugs me. Im a fan of some MAC products, but not the type of fan that I have to run to the store and pick up every item from a new collection that comes out.  I also think that if they gave the US/Canada based bloggers this opportunity, why not give some Europe based bloggers this opportunity too.

I have only found out about this collection today and whilst i can see your point i have to disagree. I think that for a massive well known brand like Mac to be launching a collection created by bloggers is a huge acheivement in the blogging world. Yes all the bloggers who are included are amazing to us who read blogs but surely it must feel like a privalige to them as well. I would love to have seen this all over and not just america and canada as well but i think its a positive step that mac have taken.xx

Oh I don't disagree with you on the point of them using bloggers and giving them the choice to create products. I just dont agree with what I assume is the motive behind it.  I really hope they will do a European-based collection of this type.

I agree with you on the points you raise issue with, such as milking customer's money by launching collections after collections. Most of them are pretty boring and no one talks about anyway (Stylishly Yours?) but some are good. I think it would be ok just to launch 4-5 per year, 1 every season or so. I think it is a scam that they repromote stuff in their "limited edition" collections. I don't know enough of their products, so I might have bought something like that in the past, but I don't buy it a lot, so doesn't bother me personally, but I don't agree with the principle. Also, for the bloggers, well I think this is good for them! I have to say thought that many are disapointed that it is only available to USA and Canada. I don't think this is going to change anything regarding MAC sales. We all remember the fuss the Rodarte collection did last summer, yet MAC is still as strong as it is before (if not stronger).

I'm glad you are agreeing with me and I totally agreew with you on the point that this is not gonna be doing anything against their profits. But that's sort of my point. It's doing more for them because everyone is like 'Ohhh they are doing something for bloggers' well if they did they could offer discounts or something, but they just sell it for the same price and all that. I just think it's a shame that people buy into their hype so much. There's many other brands that seem to have better ethics.

I agree n btw MAC is not worldwide just a few rich countries…

Lets be realistic darling….every company creates new products aiming at the increase of its profits….I think that Mac's excellent Marketing Department has innovated by creating products with the cooperation of beauty bloggers than using and  promoting new products suggested beauty experts- famous chemists- actresses and models etc. It's a brilliant marketing idea which Mac i sgonna turn  it into lots of dollars…..I cannot find anything wrong about that…It's a free market out there…look what is happening with the BB creams..yes Mac launches many same products in different collections if you are not obliged to buy the product check it test it and after buy it if you like it…

    i feel you.

just commented to share my honest opinion-thoughts as you did…..we just have different opinions..yes you stated that every company aims at making profits the way that Mac has selected is aggresive marketing this doesn't annoying me….today the vast majority of these companies really struggles to take a bigger market share from each other this is a common marketing policy…..chech beauty and lifestyle magazines….everything is a promotion of a product expressed in a face of a model, actress etc isn't thata annoying yes because I want to buy more and more and more even if I don't have the money……Mac this time "hit" the market and released some new products for the next door girl by exploiting the huge advantages that social media offer free advertising by renowed bloggers….I think that is brilliant….it's a free market out there yes many of us are annoyed by this aggressive marketing policy….but I believe that we should be more annoyed by the way big beauty companies test their products though…no harmed feeling here….

  • http://www.missdriftedsnowwhite.com/ Miss drifted Snow Wh

totally agree with you, we should bemore annoyed with more than just MAC, and I am, but MAC stands out being the most aggressively selling company.

  • http://www.missdriftedsnowwhite.com/ Miss drifted Snow Wh

i hope it wont become a trend to be honest. i think its a great idea to reward bloggers, but then they should make special discounts available to bloggers or make the products exclusively to bloggers or something. i know that's an idealistic, naive view point, but i just dont agree with big companies cashing in on the ideas of people that help them make profits as it is (and this part doesnt just apply to mac actually)PS- im honoured that you read my blog!!

For me I only like some of the MAC products and those tend to be the Pro ones.  As for the Collections, I never liked that they make them limited edition.  If they made new collections part of their permanent line-up, consumers would realized just how similar the colors in collections are to some in the permanent line.  Because they go so fast and so exclusive, they don't give people a chance to compare colors therefore ending up with like 5 lipsticks which are nearly the same color.  The eyeshadow colors created above are very similar to ones that they have had before.  I don't own any Lipglass so I can't comment on that (however that purple one looks hot, but NYX has a similar color, African Queen I think).  I DO NOT like that they are making this North America only.  Most of the bloggers from this line have readers all over the world.  They are essentially cashing in on blogger's ideas because they've maybe ran out of their own?  I can't really see a reward to the bloggers or the community that they have done with this collection.  No discount, no blogger-only product, and regular pricing.  I tend to stick to MUFE, great products and quality. They also don't come out with 50 billion collections a year.  Moulin Rouge is in their regular line up with different packaging and the Trés Vichy collections will go into their permanent line (I spoke to their flagship store) except maybe the faux cils.  Awesome post Maria.
