AW 2011: Diana Vickers for Very

Some of you might not remember who Diana Vickers is. I had to just google it myself. I know of her, her name is familiar to me, but I couldn’t remember how she got famous (and hence her own clothing line at Very). Apparently she was the bookies’ favorite to win in the 2008 X Factor Series, but managed to only get 4th place.

Somehow she still got famous. Nowadays that wouldn’t happen. I can’t even remember the 2 (was it even 2?) other finalists from last year’s X Factor, and the winner from 2009′s X Factor even got dropped from his recording deal. So how did Diana Vickers manage to get her own collections at Very even though she only made 4th? Anyways, I digress…
My thoughts
I’m torn about this collection. I love 3 pieces (the red shift dress, the pink & floral short jumpsuit and the grey knitted dress) but overall, I sort of feel like most of the items would’ve been more ideal for the summer. We had the marine theme and the floral and cute animal prints and the  jumpsuits this summer, right? And who would wear a short jumpsuit in the winter? I certainly would not! Care too much about my ovaries to let them freeze to death! But I do love the 60s feel of the entire collection and while I might not know Diana Vickers, I do love Very and she does look awesome in these pictures! LOVE the messy beehive!! But for me from this collection, I am missing more … you know… pieces that keep you and everything you have warm…
What do you think of this collection?
Much love,
Miss drifted Snow White

Hmm…. For me I don’t understand how singing qualifies her as a designer. A bit like Katie Price – having fingers in lots of pies that have no real substance or credit! eee!! The clothes are nice and are slightly different from what we’re already seeing in the shops but they don’t appear to be ground breaking but it works because she’s cute and petite. I guess she is becoming a brand/it girl thing now…or trying to!

I was like WTF! 2008?!? when I read it I can’t believe she was that long ago!

I can understand that some people don’t know who Diana Vickers is, and can’t quite wrap their heads around the fact that she has her own fashion collection. Let me try to fill in some of the blanks.

She was signed to RCA records immediately after leaving the X-Factor. She was also signed to Universal records, in a 500,000 pound publishing deal, as she’s also a songwriter. Whilst working on her 1st album, she was approached to do the part of ‘Little Voice’ in ‘The Rise and Fall of Little Voice’ in the West End. Many were dubious she could pull this off, myself included, but, she performed the role to standing ovations and critical praise for her performances, and also received the award for ‘London Newcomer of the Year’ .

Her first single “Once’ went straight in at No. 1 on the Charts. Her album, released about a month later, also went straight in at No. 1.

She has also been a familiar face at many fashion shows, and has been showcasing many of the designs of both local and international fashion designers, at either her concerts or other personal appearances. During London Fashion Week, this year, one of the events was delayed by 45 mins, waiting for Diana. Apparently, her transport to the event had broken down or something. Anyway, the delaying of the event until she arrived, is some indication of how much importance many of the those within the Fashion Industry consider her to have.

Given that so many consider her a style-icon and role model, it makes perfect sense for her to be asked to design a fashion collection, which is exactly what she did. She’s not exactly new to fashion and/or design.

In amongst everything else she does, she’s also been working on her 2nd album, and has spent time in LA working with some big names in the music world.

So, for those who don’t know much about her, don’t be so quick to write her off. Another Katie Price she is not. Katie is famous for one thing, .. well, 2 things actually, and that’s it.

Diana, on the other hand, has proven what an incredibly multi-talented  young woman she is, and, I wish her every success. She works hard, and deserves the rewards.

      thank you for your comment.

my point about diana and getting her own collection was more regarding the fact that she only made 4th place and still got famous, which was 2008/2009. my point was actually that that wouldn’t happen nowadays with someone who got 4th place on x factor in 2010.

i didnt say she didnt deserve it and i didnt say i didnt like the collection because she only made 4th place and stuff.

it’s pretty clear in my post xxxx

I'm not entirely sold on this collection either, to be honest. I personally think the coat on the top right row is bloody hideous. I'd look like a giant fat rectangle in it as I am decidedly bigger than Diana is.I too love the 60s vibe of the collection and think that whilst some dresses in warmer fabrics, or fabrics you can layer are essential for AW, I also think that comfort is a big thing. I love the outfit she is wearing top row on the very left. Classy, I think. There are some nice pieces, but whereas with Fearne Cotton's collection for Very I only disliked a few of her pieces in the past, I only actually like a few of the pieces in this, meaning I dislike more than I like. Most of the collection I just wouldn't purchase or wear. Great post!
