“How do you see people linking their blog when they comment on your blog post?”
That was more or less the topic of #blogchat (the America equivalent to #bblogger) Sunday night, and I took part for the very first time. I didnt even really know it existed; I had never really paid attention – I mean I barely participate in the #bblogger chats (tut tut to myself!)
I actually only caught the lovely Erin Scandalous retweeting a tweet from that #blogchat that did my head in:
I massively disagree. But maybe I’m just different.
I dont get a lot of comments so I appreciate each and every one. And it’s not like I am forced to click on a link when it’s included in a comment, right? You know, freedom of choice or whatever it is? But even if I would be getting a lot of comments, I sure as hell still don’t have to click on the links? So why would I care if it included a link or not if it doesn’t make any difference to me?
People then started bombarding me with tweets saying how it would be advertising and how people should pay for that. HUUUH? I dont get it. It’s a link, not a picture or whatever. It’s a link. That I dont have to click on.
And if my readers bother taking the time to read through my comments and find links, it’s still their choice to click on it too (not that I think any commenter bothers really reading through other people’s comments).
And for me the following is the most important thing (for me):
Much love,
Miss drifted Snow White

Maybe those who are against it are fearing to lose traffic…I take blogging as fun…if it becomes competition then it doesn’t remain fun at all!!
I really don’t think it matters…I can see why it is considered as spam, and why many bloggers dislike it, but I personally have found many good blogs through these links that I otherwise wouldn’t have laid eyes on. I may think differently if my blog became really really successful, but I really doubt a few links would bother me…
X
I don’t mind at all if people leave their links on my blog, I don’t see it as advertising and I don’t find it rude. I’ve actually found some great blogs by clicking on links left on comments!
Some people are just too precious about blogging. We all blog we all want people to see our work. I really don’t mind if people put links in their comments. In fact I prefer it because I usually check out if they have a blog so I can just click the link. Some people think it’s ok to tell other people what they can and can’t do online. Guess what you can’t.

lol, my thoughts exactly! i cracked up at “people are just too precious about blogging” hahahah!
Seriously, if it’s a signature, I’m absolutely fine with it. Now, if it’s just “nice, come follow me!!!!!! xoxoxoxoxox enter my giveaway, check out my blog, youtube, twitter” then YEAH that’s way spammy. but a regular comment and a signature?? Please get over yourself, not that big a deal.
I wrote about this here and my thoughts: http://www.socialitedreams.com/blog-posts/friend-friday-self-promotion.html
I had always thought it was “bad etiquette” so I didn’t dare do it, possibly thinking that my blogs are linked to my profile on blogger and so when checking “who’s this people saying such and such in the comments” one could arrive to my blogs too (well, at least that’s how I found some of the blogs I read the most, when reading blogger-hosted blogs)… but I think it was most of all me being scared of getting “out there” in the blog world and annoying people by breaking these so called rules, more than me actually thinking it was right.
Your reasoning is just clear and perfect – no one forces you to click on a link, so what’s the big deal? While writing this, though, I’m thinking that I would get annoyed if the comment was there just as a way to put the link – it doesn’t happen to me of course, but I see lots of “big” blogs flooded by comments saying just “nice!” or something similar, and then the link…. that would feel quite wrong to me. I might even doubt the commenter has read the post, but has merely scrolled to the comment section to leave the link. I don’t know if I can explain it well… but I feel like that if the comment shows me that my post/blog has been read by the commenter, who says something relevant or interesting and not just “nice! come visit my blog!”, I wouldn’t be annoyed by the link, almost as if the commenter has earned her link… but otherwise, that’s just spamming!
Im a bit hit and miss with people leaving links. Whenever anyone comments on my blog the first thing I do after reading the comment is check to see if they have a blog themselves by clicking on their picture. So people dont really need to leave a link.
the links that annoy me are the ones telling me to follow their blog or enter their giveaway – and posting it on every post I do. Once you’ve posted the first time I’ll have seen it, you dont need to do it again!
That was really rude of them having a go for using tweet deck. And leaving a link means you need to pay. So stupid! x
yeah, i actually agree with your point. i dont like it either when they are like ‘check out my blog’ blahblah, BUT at the same time, it’s still not like I or anyone else HAVE to click on the link.
I think it’s recommendable to go through all commenters and see whether they have a blog :)
Thank you for commenting hunni xxx
First of all – each to their own. If people don’t want you to leave links, it’s their blog and I think that’s OK. If the profile you use to comment is related to your blog it’s likely you’ll get click-throughs anyway if what you say is interesting.
Secondly, I think it’s important to distinguish between those that have actually READ your post and link something that is relevant to it (a review they’ve done of a similar product for example), or make a relevant comment then do a self-promo link (which is OK in my book) and those that clearly haven’t read, don’t give a monkeys and leave a crappy comment with a self-promo link like: ‘Love your blog! Please follow mine! http://www...” That is just a touch cheeky and unnecessary in my book. If you left a nice comment, they blogger may click through to your profile and then your blog and if it’s is good, they might follow you. I just don’t really have any respect for that sort of ‘comment-on-every-blog-I can-find-and-leave-my-blog-link-to-get-followers’ mentality.I prefer relevant feedback or even interaction – email or a tweet. Not so much the begging xx
actually i agree with your point of distinguishing between actual commenters and those who just comment to plug their links!
It’s a bit annoying, but still, I’m not forced to click on it and neither is any other commenter….
But I do get your point.
Btw thank you for commenting :) <3
I agree with what most of the ladies have said here. No one forces you to click on a link, that much is true. I don’t mind signatures when people actually make a comment that relates to the post and show’s that they’ve read it. However I’m less likely to click on a link myself where someone either just posts their link or says ‘Great, here’s my Twitter, blog’ or ‘check out my blog…’ because I feel like it’s a bit rude to not offer feedback on someone elses blog but expect everyone to view yours and like it. That might just be the reserved/polite Brit in me =)
If you want to build a decent rapport with other bloggers I think it’s important to offer advice and feedback and interact with them. I have no problem with people leaving links in my comments (not that I get many, mind you! I’d like more!), but I do feel like there’s a difference between spam and leaving a link as someone who appreciates blogging and the bloggers behind it and wants to build a relationship with others online. I think it’s pointless having loads of followers if few of them interact with you or actually care about what you have to say. I have a mere 25 followers and whilst I used to get a lot of comments, my last four posts have had none at all so I wonder if there’s much point to those 25 people following me. Interesting post Maria! x
People can leave links to blogs if they like, doesnt mean I’ll click them. The only thing I don’t like is the ‘Ive followed you so follow me’ thing.
And I might have to check this #blogchat out if there’s edrama to be had
I agree with you, no one has to click on people’s links, they don’t offend me. Also if someone posts their link on my blog, well I’m likely to click, because if they liked my blog I may well like theirs. Some people are ‘far too precious’ we all do this for fun, you don’t need to click the link and you can delete the comments you don’t like. I’m grateful for any comments :p
i agree with you..
i love to go to someone’s blog who leave comment on my blog.
if they didn’t leave a link, i will click their gfc name and see if they have a blog. ;)
I am completely on the same page as you! As a new blogger myself, I appreciate any relative comments on any of my posts…with a signature/blog link reference. Obviously if it’s a simple spam post, I’d get annoyed, but if someone seriously is taking the time to read my post and say something about it, I am very appreciative!
I personally have wondered if I should leave my blog link on others’ blogs, but felt that maybe it would be annoying. It’s so weird that people would have a cow over something so little and easy to deal with–just don’t click! Right? =]
And in that regard, here’s my FIRST ever commented link to my blog: http://www.simplybellezza.com. =D

My only concern with links added to comments is does it not affect google ranking if the outbound link is not yet ranked or poorly ranked?
