Though it may not feel like it just yet, spring is right around the corner, so in preparation for swapping those heavy coats for light jackets, I’ve invited a John Lewis guest blogger to offer a run-down of the top trends.
Forming the basis for many key jacket styles this season, it’s back to basics with brilliant white. Burberry Prorsum updated its trademark trenches with white, adding capes, collars and structured arms, and created white cocoon-style coats for a Scandinavian-inspired look.
Baroque continues to be a big story in the fashion world for spring/summer 13 – after all, glitz and glamour are not just for Christmas, and the statement blazer offers an easy way to buy into the trend.
If brashy baroque isn’t really your thing, the blazer is available in many different styles this season, so you can choose preppy Oxford stripes, bright corals or even a simple striking white piece.
Bikers and Bombers
Injecting spring/summer wardrobes with a hit of feisty Fifties fashion, leather biker jackets and bombers invoke retro rockabilly styles this season. Christopher Kane added edge to pretty pastel dresses with cropped and embossed leather jackets in that all-important cocoon style, while the JW Anderson spring/summer London Fashion Week show saw monochrome quilted biker jackets worn over abstract print dresses. House of Holland updated the classic rock chick piece with high-shine metallics and Erdem powder blue hues and snakeskin prints.
For a softer take on Fifties outerwear, look to the bomber, which has this season been updated with feminine details and grown-up fabrics. Clements Ribeiro added a pretty jeweled white cotton collar to a black bomber and Mulberry reinvented the style with floral prints and mint green bouclé.
What’s your favourit coat / jacket trend for SS13? Let me know in the comments below! I have to say I think it’ll be the All-White and Statement Blazer combo for me.
